I am about to graduate from BA(Hons) Costume Interpretation with Design at The Northern School of Art. I have throughly enjoyed all of the projects I have completed and am very proud of my final project. These projects have taught me technical sewing skills as well as how to work with others in the costume industry and the consideration on lots of factors when designing and making.
June 2025 - April 2026
Over the course of 10 months I designed and created these costumes for my final project. They are for 'The Doll' - Coppelia, and 'The Inventor' - Dr. Coppelius, as a reimagining of the classic ballet story as a fairytale movie. When designing the costumes, I wanted it to fell as though the charachters had walked off the page of a storybook.
Coppelia's costume incorporates a spinning key to bring her to life as a clockwork doll - the visible 'key' part I designed, 3D printed, and painted, and the underlying strap system and electronics I soldered, programmed, designed, and stitched. The rest of the costume includes hand painting, hand embroidery, and a whole host of sewing techiniques.
Dr. Coppelius' costume incorporteas all of the other areas of costume making I am intersted in: tailoring, digital embroidery, leather work, etc...
As Part of this project, I collaborated with Rosie Durrance. She designed and built a set of the Inventor's workshop:

We worked with Beamish Museum on a live project about people living in the north east in the 50s. I created this dress for a teen girl character based on photographic and contextual research into fashions of the decade. I made a full petticoat as well as drafting the pattern for the dress and hand stitching the finishing touches. My dress was then chosen to be on display at the museum.
I designed and made costumes for an in house production of The Crucible, a play about the salem which trials. I worked as part of a team of students, together we designed and made costumes for the whole production in line with the brief given to us by the director. This is the costume I designed and made for Abigail, one of the main charachters.
The aim of this project was to learn lots of the techiniques of tailoring and produce a taoilred jacket at the end. I created a wool jacket with polyester lining, with a welt pocket at the chest and two single jetted pockets with flaps at the hip.

This is a recreation of Boromir/Aragorn’s vambraces from Lord of the Rings. I consulted with experts to help source the veg tanned leather and copied the design into the leather by hand, dyed the leather, and did the saddle stitching by hand. This was my first leather work project and it has since become a specialist interest of mine.

Our first project was done in support of a local exhibition at The Museum of Hartlepool, which celebrated the life and fashion collection of Marguerite Elliot. We were commisioned to create simplistic dresses inspired by the 60s. I created the design on the fabric using fabric paint and stitched it together.
